F.I.T. Force

Neighborhood HealthSource has implemented a community-based, healthy lifestyle program called F.I.T. Force, to reach youths 10 to 18 years old to prevent and decrease the prevalence of obesity in Northwest and Northeast Minneapolis.

Our program is delivered through strong organizations in the community, including schools, libraries, and recreation centers. The program is based on healthy lifestyle changes with nutrition and physical activity education.

We are using a curriculum that is taught over six or twelve weeks in one hour sessions. The curriculum has a 30-minute emphasis on nutrition with hands on activities and visual aids and 30-minutes of ‘fun’ physical activity. The program also offers in-clinic obesity-prevention support with the help of a registered dietician.

Our program outcome goals include:
· Improvement in youth’s health through lowered heart rate and BMI.
· Increased level of physical activity.
· Improved diet (e.g. increased water, fruit and vegetable consumption).
· Increasing families’ use of meal planning and healthy eating.

This project was made possible with funding from the Greater Twin Cities United Way and General Mills.
